Understanding the Vagal Superhighway: Helping Children Calm, Connect & Feel Safe

As parents, caregivers, and guides, we all want to understand how to better support our children—especially in moments when they feel overwhelmed, anxious, or unsure.

One of the ways we can begin to do that is by understanding something I like to call the Vagal Superhighway.

The Vagal Superhighway is a simple way to think about how the body and brain communicate, especially when it comes to feeling safe, calm, and connected. When this “highway” is clear and flowing, children are able to regulate their emotions more easily. They can breathe, reset, and return to a place of balance.

But when that pathway becomes overwhelmed or “jammed,” children may feel anxious, overstimulated, or unable to express what they are feeling. This is often when we see meltdowns, shutdowns, or big emotions that seem to come out of nowhere.

The good news is, there are gentle, simple tools we can use to help.

At Diva Kiddie, we introduce mindfulness-based practices in a way that feels fun, accessible, and engaging for children. Meet your child’s emotional traffic controller: the breath.

There are two breathing exercises that are fun and easy to have your child do alone or with you.

Pinwheel Breathing – encouraging slow, steady breaths by gently blowing a pinwheel

Bubble Breathing – taking soft, controlled breaths to create bubbles, helping children slow down and focus

These activities may seem simple, but they are incredibly powerful. They help regulate the nervous system, support emotional awareness, and create a sense of calm in the body.

Children between the ages of 6–12 are in a very important stage of development. Teaching them how to pause, breathe, and understand their emotions gives them tools they can carry for a lifetime.

As we continue to bring Diva Kiddie into more experiences and spaces, you’ll begin to see these tools woven into what we do—through our stories, events, and take-home moments like pinwheels and bubbles.

Because sometimes, the smallest tools create the biggest shifts.
